Baltika Original Dark Beer #4 &
Extra Pale Beer #9
by AlcoholReviews.com Staff

A year back, our Moscow correspondent visited our headquarters with two or three plastic liter bottles of Baltika beer. He had lugged them from his corner store in Lyubertsy, a suburb outside Moscow, to New York City, and boy were we thrilled. So far as we knew, Baltika wasn't available in the U.S. And we sure enjoyed it.

A few weeks back we were trolling for beers along Brooklyn's Atlantic Coast. In Brighton Beach, often called Little Odessa due to its high Russo-Ukrainian population, we ran across Baltika. Baltika makes a number of beers and we could only find their Original Dark Beer #4 and their Extra Pale Beer #9. But we weren't about to complain, because last we tasted it, Baltika was excellent.

Needless to say, we were not disappointed. Both of these Baltika's were quite good. Baltika Pale, is a fair yellow beer with a lean head. In the mouth you feel the grain, a touch of honey, perhaps, then get a dry close. Not for nothing is it also labeled "Krepko" (which means "strong"). Baltika Pale Beer #9 has 8.0% alcohol and will be enjoyed by just about anyone.

We found Baltika Original #4 (5.6% alcohol) even better. The back label notes that it is a "brown beer with a harmonious bread smack and caramel malt aroma." Harmonious bread smack? Well, it is indeed a brown-red color, and it has a fat dense head. It's a little sweet, then comes a hearty caramel-honey note, and a nice crisp close. It's impressive, one for the beer afficionado.
