| Lev Lion Beers of Czech Republic
by F. Sot Fitzgerald Hoorah- more beer from Harvey Imports of California! Some time back reviewed their Lobkowicz Czech brews. They were solid performers- and so are these. Lev Lion beers are made at Mestansky Pivovar Havlickuv Brod- which is easy for them to say. The Export Lager (4.7% Alcohol By Volume) is gold colored and has a head that dissipates quickly. It's a solid lager- nothing watery about this beer, as it dishes out a biscuit flavor followed by a crisp bitter close. (Rating ***3/4) The Pale Double Bock was my favorite. It looks quite similar to the Export Lager. In the mouth, however, it is slightly sweet, and finishes far less intensely. Softer, easier, but without becoming watery. Bravo. (Rating ****) Last up was the Black Lion, the a Czech "tmave" or dark beer. Like the other two, its head was quick to fade. That left it looking a lot lot like Coca-Cola- dark, clear, and with small bubbles. Drink this one in and GADZOOKS- what a flavor! It's bold, bold with chocolate and coffee. Who would have thought a lager-bodied beer could offer up so much flavor? It's not for the meek, but the beer nut must give this one a run. (Rating ***1/2) |
