Beers from the Ukraine- Obolon Premium & Slavutych Classic by F. Sot Fitzgerald When the USSR collapsed and its economy began to spiral, folks in Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet republics began emigrating. A great many Russians and Ukrainians have landed in New York City, especially in the southeast reaches of Brooklyn- Brighton Beach, Coney Island, for example. Naturally, some of their mores have come with them, including food and drink. |
Although Obolon Premium and Slavutych Classic both are Ukrainian lagers, the difference in taste is huge. Obolon Premium (5.2% alcohol) is a salty brew that has a Heineken-like smell. Unlike Holand's Heinie, though, it lacks a crisp finish, and more or less slathers the mouth with an unpleasant bitterness. (Rating **) For more info surf to http://www.beerwineimport.com/beerlist.html. Slavutych Classic (4% alcohol), though, is a good beer. It is a touch salty, with a slight lemon taste, which makes it crisp and refreshing. Slavutych is a fine beer for the warmer months. Give it a try. (Rating ***) Slavutych Classic is imported by Doyna Michigan Company, who can be reached at 248-426-7273. Reviewed 12/31/00 |
