Quilmes Beer
by F. Sot Fitzgerald

Argentina- land of some of the world's most beautiful people, semi-nude beaches, and wonderful weather.

I had not tried an Argentinean beer before Quilmes, and I must say, I was thrilled to have found this brown 12 ounce bottle for just $1.50 in a Hispanic section of Brooklyn.

While I hadn't pined for any specific qualities in this beer, I had hoped that it was good enough to take to parties and serve it at one of my tastings.  How hip would that make me to serve a snazzy Argentinean beer in this retro blue and silvered labeled bottle?  Damned hip, I can assure you.

Alas, Quilmes was a bit of a disappointment.  As one of my fellow dipsomaniacs growled after taking a tug of it, "It has no qualities, it's like water."  I agree. The bouquet reveals nearly nothing and one can taste only a bit of grain and a very slight acidic taste.  It makes me wonder if this is a mostly rice-based brew with just a dash of barley or wheat pitched in.

So, this lack of taste and general thinness (it has the same color as Lite Beer from Miller) might make this a terrific beer to drink on a blazing hot day, or when one is craving to drink alcohol but doesn't want to smell like he's been drinking.  Beyond those rare times, though, I dare say that Quilmes is probably not worth seeking out.  (Rating **)
