| Calvados by Pere Magloire and Daron
by Kevin R. Kosar It is unfortunate that Calvados is not more widely consumed in America. It really can be wonderful to drink, especially during autumn and winter's chill. Unfortunately, this import has made little headway in America, being lost in the spirit portfolios of many large international import houses and showing up at only a few bars and fine spirits retailers. I'm honestly baffle that those who traffic in Calvados have not hitched themselves to the coattails of cider, which has made quite a resurgence amongst consumers in recent years. Like the american Apple Jack, Calvados is distilled from apple cider. Calvados is produced in the Normandy region of France, the Normandy region in particular, with the best being given the designation du Pays d' Auge. They are full proof spirits, packing 40% alcohol typically. When consumed, they are taken straight, no ice, and in a brandy snifter or perhaps white wine glass which will funnel the vapors and aromas to the drinker's nose. The Calvados tasted are labeled Fine, VSOP, and XO. These are age-based designations, with Fine being 1-2 years, VSOP being 4+ years, and XO being 10+ years. All were du pays d' Auge. |
| We
begin with three Calvados from Pere Maggiore. The Fine Calvados
tastes like a light, potent cider. It is a little warm going down,
and has baked apple notes. Not for the weak of spirit. (Rating
**3/4)
Pere Magloire's VSOP is aged 4 years and the increased time in barrel shows. It is much softer than their Fine Calvados and though not complex, it's tenderness makes it attractive for quaffing straight. Recommended. (Rating ***1/4) The XO is almost amber colored. It is bold, like a strong Armagnac, with sweet caramel, cinnamon and barrel notes. Recommended. (Rating ***3/4) |

Next we move to two Calvados by
Daron. Their Fine calvados ($24.99) is
gold colored, noses, interestingly, of apple and a touch of pear, and is
smooth but warm going down. Like the Pere Magloire Fine Calvados,
it is enjoyable, but only for the stout of tongue. (Rating ***1/4)
Daron's XO is 18 years old is is absolutely fabulous. It is copper colored, nuanced, and offers up notes of baked apples, cinnamon, vanilla and more. It is priced at $27.99 per 375 ml. bottle and I would assert that it is worth every penny of it and more. Highly Recommended. (Rating ****3/4) |
