Tuaca Liqueur
by F. Sot Fitzgerald

Some months back AlcoholReviews.com got an email from a young chap named Tom Breecher. He works in a liquor store in Wisconsin, was deeply interestd in the business, and wanted to know if we had tried Tuaca. Nobody on staff had, nor had ayone heard of it. So Mssr. Breecher was kind enough to send us a bottle. Bottle arrives, bottle is shipped over to me, and one-quarter of bottle is rapidly consumed.

Tuaca is an Italian liqueur, some 35% alcohol. Brown-Forman of Lousville, Kentucky imports it and for some odd reason they're marketing it under the slogan "Sent from Heaven, Consumed Like Hell." I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. If they're trying to paint this stuff as wild, like, say Firewater, that 100+ proof schnapps that makes peope tear doors off their hinges, they're clearly off the mark.

Tuaca is much more mellow, dare I say, thoughtful than that. You don't do belts of this until you're loopy, you either sip it on ice or mix it with, say, cola. Or, as one reader has suggested, you can mix it with milk. While it does have a slight boozy ester, it is a genial, viscous, brown liquuer that tastes of orange, hazelnut, and vanilla. I can see taking a nice cignac glass full of this after a hearty meal in the autumn months. I'd refrigerate it first, lest the richness over power my palate. But it's dessert fair, not a bracing pick-me-up like, say, Lemoncello. (Rating***1/2)
