Three Vodkas- Burnett's, Iceberg &
Reval
The comparison
of these three vodkas side by side is a useful exercise in vodka education.
In them we see a range of vodka paragons- the good mixer, the clean, dry
vodka, and the rich, flavorful vodka.
Burnett's
exemplifies a solid mixing vodka. It's dry, a little earthy, but warm
going down. Tough guys might knock this back straight, but then again,
we don't look to tough guys for advice on matters of culinaria and good
drink. (Rating **3/4)

At the 1998 World's Spirits Championship,
the tasters from the Beverage Tasting Institute blind sampled 40 vodkas.
They picked Iceberg as their favorite. No knock to Iceberg, but
we've long found BTI's ratings a bit bizarre. What they call perfect others
find to be pretty good; what they call mediocre others rate as superb.
Go figure.
Either way- this Canadian vodka is no fire water. Iceberg is
quite smooth. It is dry, lean and clean, very much along the lines of
a Ketel One. On the downside, there does seem to be a little heat going
down. Wedon't chalk that up to the spirit so much as the viscocity there
of. The thicker the spirit, the less burn. Iceberg is solid, but not nearly
as thick as, say, Rain
or Quotes
or Chopin. (Rating ***1/4) For more info about about Iceberg, surf

Then we turn to Reval Vodka, the hearty, flavorful vodka of the bunch. Reval
comes from Estonia, and it is thick. After a long chill in the freezer
it just glops into your glass. Reval is a blend of grains- rye (50%),
wheat (25%) and barley (25%). It is super soft in the mouth, offering
up a mineral note, followed by hearty rye, toffee and a general sweetness.
It very impressive and, astonishingly, very inexpensive. One liter bottles
cost about $14; compare that to Chopin and other super premiums which
will run you $30 or more. Highly Recommended and a Best Buy. (Rating
****1/2)
