9/11/2002 HOPE ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2001 Once again Michael Hope has shown why he is one of Australia's hot, young wine men. No, no, it's not because he wears a thong while picking his grapes- rather, it's the remarkable quality he produces for the price he's selling at. This beauty goes for a mere $8-$10 and is sure to please nearly anyone. It offers up notes of oak, tart sour apple, and buttery toasty tastes. I had it with some pungent broiled salmon and vegetables cooked in olive and chopped onions and it stood up to them and played with them quite well. BEST BUY. 9/11/02 NYTimes Catches Up to AlcoholReviews.com...At Last Years ago we whooped over the great value of Michel Lynch Bordeaux ($8-$10 a bottle!). Seems the NYTimes has finally gotten the hint. See Leslie Sbrocco's piece in the 9/11 edition at http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/11/dining/11winepicks.html...
9/10/2002 WALLABY CREEK SHIRAZ 2000 Whatta bargain! Like the Aussie bargain-mega-seller, Yellowtail, which we've reviewed previously (find it by using our SEARCH ENGINE), Wallaby Creek is a $7-8 wine that is crafted for the chug-and-smile crowd. It is light bodied, noses of blackberries, currants, and a wee bit of menthol and eucalyptus. In the mouth its about the same and dangerously quaffable. At this price: load up, invite guests over, and let the corks pop. (Rating ***) For more information on Wallaby Creek see AviImports.com.
9/10/2002 PIERRE SPAAR RELEASES INTRIGUING WHITE BLEND Pierre Spaar, the Alsatian wine maker that has wowed us previously with their Rieslings, Gewurztraminer, and such has now sent us something that made our heads spin: Alsace One. This blend seems to have everything in it but the kitchen sink: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat...The result is-- surprise, surprise-- a complex amalgam that had us scratching our heads and floundering as we tried to tease out the notes. While we failed on the latter count, we can tell you this: for $10 a bottle it is definitely worth a taste. Indeed, we finished the bottle! For more information on Pierre Spaar wines, email the importers, W.J. Deutsch and Sons at info@wjdeutsch.com.
