Francis Coppola Rosso 1998
& Niebaum-Coppola Rubicon 1996
by F. Sot Fitzgerald

I was tempted to begin this review in the form of an epistle.

Dear Mr. Coppola,

Thank you for helping Zelduh and four dear friends of mine get riotously soused and deliriously lewd.  It was your wines that did this to us.

Which was true.  During appetizers and diner we downed a bottle of Rosso and then the bottle of Rubicon and suddenly found ourselves hooting and conversing in the most obscene fashion.  It was a grand evening and none of us will forget it soon.  In looking back, I am still baffled why these wines got us so loaded.  The Rosso is 13.5% alcohol and the Rubicon 14.1%, but considering there were six of us and at least of us are sots, we just shouldn't have been so plowed.

Well, like the Bianco 1998, Coppola's Rosso 1998 costs under $10- a real bargain considering how good it is.  At least two of the folks in attendance at the aforementioned dinner party are now buying bottles of the Rosso regularly. They're hooked, as well they should be, as Rosso 1998 is a delightfully fruity and light red table wine, made from a blend of five varieties of grapes.  This one is certainly worth taking to a party or sharing with guests.

The Rubicon 1996 is for those with deep pockets.  It is a $90 bottle of wine, and in retrospect I wished I hadn't consumed it under such nutty circumstances.  On the other hand, if I'm going to drink wine, better it be among playful friends than alone and somber.  Obviously, we loved this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  And we weren't alone.  The highbrows over at Decanter magazine tasted it and gave it their 5 star award, describing it as

"Deep, rich vanilla and cassis aroma.  Fresh on the palate, with huge, classy proportions almost impenetrable concentration...Rich and ripe, with a slightly porty tone and chewy tannins."

High-winded, but all true. (Rating ****1/2)
