The Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2000
by Kevin R. Kosar

Georges Duboeuf's Beaujolais Nouveau 2000 became available to shoppers November 16.  I had the pleasure of quaffing some of the first bottles opened in this country at a party in Manhattan.

This year's Beaujolais Nouveau, which has been hyped by print and television ads, did not disappoint.  It's, as always, light and fruity, and this year it dishes out spicy notes of tea leaves and cinnamon.  Warm or chilled, it's tasty. (Rating ***1/2)

For those wondering why all the hype- Beaujolais Nouveau has become a kind of cultural-marketing phenomenon.  It's a wine that is made in a blink; to put it a bit too simply- the grapes are plucked, pressed, and the juice is fermented and bottled.  No long years aging in barrels in a cellar for this red wine.  The result of this quick birth, as Duboeuf's folks put it, is that
"the phenolic compounds, in particular the astringent tannins, normally found in red wines, aren't there, leaving an easy to drink, fruity wine. This, coupled with the fact that it tastes best when chilled, makes for a festive wine to be gulped rather than sipped, enjoyed in high spirits rather than critiqued."

In short- it's an inexpensive, party wine that will appeal to many if not most palates and there's none of that highbrow wine and French seriousness about it.  Grab a bottle, poor a big glass, chug it, smile.
