J. Lohr
Bay Mist Monterey White Riesling 2000 ($7.50) (11% alcohol)
Gracious- is this Riesling or a late harvest Riesling dessert wine? Wave the glass under your nose and your schnozz is flooded with apricot, sugar and apple. In the mouth, interestingly, it's quite light, almost effervescent. A strange bird, and one glass was enough...Until we paired it with super spicy Thai food, then hooo-boy, down went the whole bottle! Cavit Pinot Grigio ($9) (12% alcohol)
A mild white Italian wine that is slightly grassy. It doesn't offer the whacky fireworks that the J. Lohr did. Which is good, in that it is easier to drink sans food. Cavit Pinot Grigio is a moderately dry wine that's a little herbal and a wee bit tart. Pleasantly restrained and just right for pairing with salads, mild seafood, and perhaps simple chicken dishes. Solid. (Rating ***1/4) For more info on this wine, surf to: http://www.palmbayimports.com |
Wyndham Estate Bin 777 Semillon
1999 ($9) (11% alcohol) Straight up, this Australian wine is passable- it's melon sour, and dishes some toast on the close. Pair it with something spicy, like Thai food, and it blooms. The melon and sour softens, oaky vanillans emerge, as does a touch of lemon. Stands up well to medium spicy Thai food.
