Cocktails at Chinoiserie
Not
too long back, we got an invite to check out a new Chino-French
restaurant, Chinoiserie. We loped over to Park Avenue South,
strolling north, north until- hark- we found it at at 26th
Street.
A posh hotel loomed above the slick Chinoiserie, which is tucked in a dim basement with water
flowing softly from the walls. The cocktails there were
on the frontier of surreal. Take the Silk Road. Nothing
tricky, but who would have thought of mixing champagne and
a dash of ginger liqueur? Then there's the Ms. Shanghai,
their take on the martini. It has plenty of Grey Goose vodka,
Bombay gin, and lychee extract. Yee Gods, one of these and
you'll be wobbling to the music that creeps from the invisible
speakers about the place.
Chinoiserie has, oh, 15
or more of these wild concoctions. While we really enjoyed
the Chocolate Martini (Absolut vodka, white Creme
de Cocoa, cocoa powder on the martini glass rim), our favorite
was the Buddha's Smile. Gads was it complex-
Absolut Peppar vodka, ground cinnamon, black pepper, clove,
fennel seeds, and anise powder. Unbelievable.

The Leap Frog- A Simple Summer Drink
Not everybody has lychee extract or ginger liqueur lying about their home bar- hell, few
actual bars have these items. In which case, here's a much simpler recipe- the Leap Frog.
It's super easy and great for summertime.
Here's how- Pour 1.5 ounces of gin and 1.5 ounces of lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.
Plop in a few icecubes and shake until the ice is in chards. Pour into a collins glass,
then fill with ginger ale. Voila!
